WORKING TOWARDS ENDING PERIOD POVERTY AND STIGMA

What & Why?
Our aim is to provide primary school ages children (upper Key Stage 2) with the Essentials they need for starting their periods. We provide them with age-appropriate personal hygiene items that will support them during an unsettling time, as well as ensuring all of the young people have the same start and support — ensuring they do not have to miss out on their school education, whilst educating them on their personal care too.

We strive to ensure that all young people starting their menstruation are not discriminated against in any way — particularly due to poverty. We will equip each young person with the essentials for starting out, working alongside the idea that schools can also provide children with menstrual products too.

We believe this is essential in ensuring that young people have: complete access to their education, equal access to essential products and the confidence they need (and will require) for this new chapter of their lives.
The key for us is creating positive relationships with the local primary schools and local community, where the majority of our donations come from.

 HOW
‘The Little Red Box’ thrives off the donations and kind hearts of the local community, with several donation points located in places such as local supermarkets and small businesses.

With the donations and funding we receive, we are able to provide the young people with the essentials for their ‘first period’ — supporting them physically, mentally and emotionally, to deal with challenges that will lie ahead.
Having built positive relationships with the local schools, we know that the bags we create have provided them with a ‘talking point’ for their PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) lessons within Key Stage 2. This is encouraging schools to provide a more focused education on periods, menstruation and female changes in a way that is practical and easy to understand for the young people. and helps to reduce the stigma around menstruation.

Each bag that we make contains the following items:-
  • A canvas tote bag
  • 3 various sizes of period pads (size 1, 2 and night time pad)
  •  Deodorant
  • Shower gel
  • Face wash or wipes
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Pouch to hold period pads, made for by our volunteers
  • Chocolate Bar
  • Information Leaflet
